Balloon Mission(Mission 2) - Detailed Mission Plan

Having completed your experiments with your Weather Station at ground level, in contact with your wifi network, we begin to explore further away from our school base. During this time we learn about collecting data on movement, as well as radio communication.

1) Research to gain a background understanding of the environment from ground level to 5km. We have supplied some links here to assist you with your research: Radio Communication, GPS, IMU, helium balloon missions, parachutes, and flight controls.

2) Select data to be collected.

We have included a balloon flight article that describes which data should be collected.

3) Collect Data - Build a WeatherSat

To collect our data we will add more sensors to our weather station to create a WeatherSat. The Balloon Mission sensors in your X in a Box XK07 are:

SI01 - IMU 9 degrees of freedom (9DOF_-_Nine_Degrees_of_Freedom)

SN01 - GPS

If you wish to collect additional data you will need additional sensors. You can find a list of additional sensors here: X in a Box Sensors.

The data collected from all your sensors will be communicated to you on the ground using a Long Range Radio RL03. To receive the data on the ground, you will build a radio Ground Station by combining a second LoRa radio RL03, WiFi CW01 and USB power IP01

4) Analyse Data

The data has been transferred to the Data Dashboard where it displays. If you wish to analyse the data further, you can download the data from the dashboard into a spreadsheet for further analysis.

Analysis Techniques - for each experiment we have suggested the analysis techniques that will be useful. To develop a healthy foundation in analysis, you should understand the concepts shared on this site https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_analysis.

Analysis Tools - all the data analysis can be conducted using formulas in a spreadsheet. Your school will be able to give you access to the software chosen for data analysis.

Data verification - we need to make sure that the data that we have collected is accurate and that we can verify its quality. To achieve this, we will use theoretical physics to see how well our data matches the theoretical outcome. Phase 1 data verification.

5) Present Findings

The results that you have collected from each of the experiments can be presented to your class, or a larger audience. We have prepared some tips on presentation skills for you.

6) Recommendations

All researchers create new knowledge and this always leads to more questions! We would like you to recommend more or alternative experiments to be conducted to understand our environment at ground level. You may also have some tips and tricks that you can share(☒ Forum).
